I learn Russian because...

I like Russian music and literature. Wish to read Chekhov in original language.

The most difficult was…

Grammar is complicated but challenging. Russian is Russian.

I recommend...
Have lessons at least once a week, preferably twice. And remember to do your homework! And most of the time, don’t ask why, just memorize the endless exceptions, you will be fine.

Barbara is in Russia, KALININGRAD now. Here is her BLOG.

I learn Russian because...
Russia is such a fascinating country! Rich in history and culture being manifested in varying forms such as its extremely disturbing psychological films, Russian literature (haven’t managed to read any classics yet though…only have tried reading some modern Russian Soviet and post-Soviet literature, still very interesting and morbid and insightful especially to human soul and interestingly the ‘russian soul’), Russian music and Russian politics!

The most difficult was…

For almost everything and every case you have to keep changing. It is no wonder Russians are so smart people, they think too much about languages…..such that their language is too complicated. But, it's still far easier than Chinese (for non-chinese) and Arabic.

I recommend...
Immerse in Russian culture and be interested in the things you learn. Try to watch some movies or Russian music or anything such that you can be more interested in learning this language.
Also if you join, the teacher Katya will organize a blini and vodka party, so please quick sign up and join!

I learn Russian because...

I am a professional classical musician. Lots of classical music in the late 19th and 20th centuries are by Russian composers. Also, lots of music scores are printed with Russian alphabets. I thought it would be helpful to my music if I could learn to read the Russian alphabet and understand a bit of the Russian culture.

The most difficult was…
Trying to read more fluently with the Russian alphabet and trying not to get confused with the English alphabet. So I try to read anything in Russian even though I don't understand the words, just to get used to reading the alphabet. Learning to pronounce the soft sign was pretty hard too. I tried to imitate Katya and she was very patient to repeat it with me.

I recommend...
One-on-one individual classes to maximize practicing opportunities with Katya. Also, I get to ask more questions regarding the Russian culture instead of just what I got from the book.

I learn Russian because...

I'm going to work in Russia.
My girlfriend is Russian.

The most difficult was…

The start, once the alphabet is known and the difficulty of the language accepted, no more surprise. All is equally difficult or easy...

I recommend...
To enjoy. To have a good teacher, like Katya; and to be prepared for a slow start.

This is an impossible task, yet made possible because we have a great teacher.

The most difficult - grammar; the most fun - when everyone is not afraid to make mistakes and keep trying; the most inspiring - a room of humor and encouragement. I miss every moment of it.

I learn Russian because...

I always travel to places where people speak only Russian. I've made my resolution to learn the language before I visit these places again.

The most difficult was…

Finding who teaches Russian language here. I'm glad I've found RLC.

I recommend...
Enjoy the lessons, do the homework and try to read it loud.

I learn Russian because...

I first picked up Russian in Moscow in order to survive mu study exchange program there. Then, meeting plenty of amazing Russian friends both in Russia and Singapore, kept my interest going. And now with stronger than ever Russia-Singapore business ties, my decision to continue studying Russian is sealed.
The most difficult was…

Whith my limited vocabulary and strange pronounciation, having to translate what I want to say from English into Russian was tough and then having anyone (Russian-speaking or learning Russian) understand what I really intended to say added to the struggle.

I recommend...

Honestly, you really need an interesting and inspiring Russian language teacher to help you move to a higher level. Practice. Make some Russian speaking friends; force yourself to speak Russian even if it is really difficult. And if you have more money, travel to Russia, Ukraine or some CIS countries where speaking and understanding a little Russian can help you in ways you could have never imagine.
