The number of Russian tourists visiting Singapore went up to 44,000 in 2007, compared to 26,000 in 2005. The Singapore Tourism Board predicts that the number will hit 50,000 this year, according to Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo, who was speaking at the reception for the 40th anniversary of Singapore—Russia diplomatic relations (24 July).The event was also attended by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.Mr Yeo noted that Russians are the biggest spenders among Europeans in Singapore. He also commented that more Singaporeans are learning the Russian language.Mr Yeo said there is great potential for developing bilateral relationships in fields such as science and culture.
He also said Singapore is looking forward to hosting the Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, probably during the APEC Summit next year.
